Derk-Jan Jager obtained his qualification as a dentist in 2005 (University of Groningen). Subsequently he started his PhD research project (topic: development of and protection against dental erosion) and combined this with his work as a dentist. Furthermore he worked as a lecturer and dentist in prosthodontics at the UMCG Center for Dentistry and Oral Care. In 2010 he was co-founder of the Center for Special Care Dentistry (in Dutch: Centrum Bijzondere Tandheelkunde) and the Refer Practice for Oral Rehabilitation in the Martini Hospital Groningen, specializing in full rehabilitations of severe worn dentitions and implantology.
