Bio

In 2009, dr. Catherine Volgenant graduated cum laude as a dentist from the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). In 2016, she obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam with her dissertation on red autofluorescence of dental plaque at the department of Preventive Dentistry. Catherine currently works as a researcher and associate professor at the departments of Preventive Dentistry and Cariology at ACTA. She conducts (pre)clinical research into preventive agents that promote oral health, investigates the effect of socio-economic differences on the prevalence of caries and conducts clinical research into behavioural change and the prevention of caries in both low- and high-income countries. In addition, as co-author of the book 'Hygiene and Infection Prevention in Dental Practice', she is involved in education and research on infection prevention and sustainability in oral care. As chair of the Cariology department at ACTA, Catherine is ultimately responsible for the education in cariology and is involved in international internships for students. She has management experience in, among others, the international CED-IADR, is currently secretary general of the international organization for caries research (ORCA) and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ivory Cross. She is also regularly involved in guideline development for the Dutch Knowledge Institute for Oral Care (KIMO).
