Dr. Toon Ligtenberg is an Associate Professor of the Department of Oral Biochemistry at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). From his PhD graduation in 1992 until now, he has been conducting research on the biochemistry of saliva. Besides numerous publications, he is the editor of the book 'Saliva: secretion and functions'; number 24 in the Karger series 'Monographs in Oral Science'. In recent years, Toon has also investigated the effects of exercise and sports on the saliva composition, and how to use saliva to monitor exercise intensity. As a lecturer he provides courses on saliva and dry mouth, saliva and dental erosion, saliva diagnostics and the effect of exercise on saliva composition and oral health.
