Prof. dr. Astrid Bakker is a Cell Biologist, specialized in bone and the response of cells to mechanical triggers. Since 2021, she has been the head of the Department of Oral Cell Biology at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). At ACTA, she frequently gives lectures to Bachelor and Master dental students on subjects such as cell biology, the histology of the periodontium, and growth and development of dentition. During her lectures, she always strives to provide insight into the usefulness of basic knowledge for dental practice. She has also taught Molecular Cell Biology at the Amsterdam University College. The research she conducts focusses on the loss of bone related to physical inactivity or inflammation (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis or periodontitis) and the prevention thereof.
